Police in Chapainawabganj have detained Rajia Sultana Shampa, the treasurer of the district Women’s League, on charges of celebrating the anniversary of the banned Awami League. She was arrested from her residence in the Shiala Colony area of Sadar Upazila on Tuesday (June 24) night.
According to sources, a trade fair organized by the Chamber of Commerce was held at the old stadium in Chapainawabganj from May 10 to June 22. Rajia Sultana Shampa, also a female entrepreneur, had taken a stall at the fair to sell children’s toys. During the fair, she cut a cake to mark the anniversary of the Awami League and posted a video of the event on Facebook. The video went viral on social media, sparking widespread criticism. Subsequently, she was detained by the Chapainawabganj Sadar Model Police Station on allegations of engaging in activities on behalf of a banned organization.
Abdul Wahed, president of the Chapainawabganj Chamber of Commerce and Industries, stated, “I am unaware of any Women’s League leader cutting a cake to celebrate the Awami League’s anniversary at the fair’s stall.”
Abdur Rahim, convener of the district Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, commented that the viral video appears to have been recorded at a stall during the trade fair.
Chapainawabganj Sadar Model Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Motiur Rahman said, “Rajia Sultana Shampa was detained from her residence on charges of working on behalf of a banned organization. Necessary legal actions will be taken after discussions with higher authorities.”
