Bangladesh-UK Relations: Strengthening Trade, Investment, and Cooperation on Rohingya Issue

The commercial and diplomatic ties between Bangladesh and the United Kingdom are steadily strengthening. Bilateral investment and trade are growing in sectors such as the garment industry, renewable energy, education, aviation, infrastructure, technology, and services.

Bangladesh’s primary exports to the UK include garments and textiles, alongside shrimp, bicycles, and handicrafts. Conversely, Bangladesh imports essential items from the UK, such as iron and scrap, machinery, generators, and aircraft. The UK is also investing significantly in Bangladesh’s industrial, infrastructure, renewable energy, and technology sectors. As a result, Dhaka has expressed keen interest in further expanding this commercial relationship.

Efforts to Recover Laundered Money
Bangladesh is actively engaged in discussions with the UK to recover illicitly transferred funds. In March, the Bangladesh government reached out to British authorities to impose financial and travel sanctions on individuals involved in money laundering. Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H. Mansur met with members of the All-Party Parliamentary Group in London to urge swift action against Bangladeshi business groups involved in these activities. Efforts are ongoing to persuade the British government to impose sanctions on money launderers, making this a key topic in bilateral discussions.
UK’s Support on the Rohingya Issue
The United Kingdom stands firmly with Bangladesh in addressing the Rohingya crisis. The UK is working to ensure the safe and dignified repatriation of the Rohingya and has provided humanitarian aid through the United Nations and other international organizations. In 2018, then-UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson visited the Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar and pledged to ensure their safety and human rights. Additionally, the UK continues to exert diplomatic pressure through the UN to compel Myanmar to guarantee citizenship and security for the Rohingya population.
