The body of Shashwat Soumya, a former student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) who passed away in Canada, was brought back to Bangladesh on Friday (June 20, 2025) afternoon. The body was first taken from the airport to his residence in Segunbagicha, Dhaka. Subsequently, it was transported to BU mutually exclusiveET’s Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) building in a hearse. During this time, the BUET Vice-Chancellor, faculty, classmates, family members, and many others gathered to pay their final respects.
On June 4, Soumya’s body was recovered from Okanagan Lake in British Columbia, Canada. He graduated from BUET’s Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department in 2021, securing the first position with a perfect 4.0 GPA. After graduation, he taught briefly at BRAC University and BUET before pursuing a PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States. He also delivered lectures on his research at various universities in Canada and the USA.
The Canadian police have not yet determined the exact cause of Soumya’s death. However, his family has claimed it was an accident. The BUET community and Soumya’s family are deeply saddened by his untimely demise.
