On the occasion of World Refugee Day, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman emphasized that the Rohingya crisis is extremely serious and urged the global community to be clearly informed about it. Highlighting Bangladesh as the primary victim of this crisis, he called for sustained diplomatic pressure on Myanmar to create a conducive environment for the safe repatriation of the Rohingyas.
In a message on Thursday (June 19) night, he stated that World Refugee Day, observed annually on June 20 by the United Nations, is a global event to honor, celebrate, and raise awareness among world leaders about the inhumane conditions faced by refugees. The day will be observed with due dignity in Bangladesh and other countries on Friday.
Rahman noted that ethnic violence and political reasons continue to make the refugee crisis a dire and inhumane issue worldwide. BNP extends full solidarity to this day and reaffirms its active support for international initiatives to ensure the dignity and repatriation of forcibly displaced people globally.
He pointed out that Cox’s Bazar’s Ukhiya-Teknaf hosts the world’s largest refugee camp, sheltering over 1.4 million Rohingyas. For the past eight years, they have sought refuge in Bangladesh, fleeing persecution in Myanmar. The people of Bangladesh have stood by them, setting a shining example of humanity. However, he urged the interim government to intensify diplomatic efforts to ensure safe repatriation by maintaining pressure on Myanmar.
He further stressed the need to highlight Bangladesh’s challenges, Myanmar’s reluctance to fulfill commitments, and the current plight of the Rohingyas before the global community. Rahman called for cooperation from the Bangladesh government, the international community, and donor agencies to ensure the dignified repatriation of the Rohingyas.
Additionally, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir issued a separate message on the occasion.
