Israeli officials have expressed surprise at U.S. President Donald Trump’s optimistic remarks about a potential ceasefire in Gaza, labeling his statement as “political fantasy.” This was reported by Turkey-based Anadolu Agency.
On Sunday, June 29, an unnamed Israeli official involved in the ceasefire and hostage exchange discussions stated that there has been no change in the positions of Hamas or the Israeli government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Consequently, the prospect of a ceasefire remains uncertain. The officials further noted that the U.S. administration supports a comprehensive agreement that would include a ceasefire, the release of Israeli hostages, and an end to the war, paving the way for broader normalization of relations in the region.
Meanwhile, reports of a Middle East visit by Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, have been dismissed as “baseless” by relevant parties. Political analysts suggest that Trump may be attempting to capitalize politically on the recent tensions between Iran and Israel.
