Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has called upon hydrographic professionals to work with greater professionalism, efficiency, and dedication to establish a comprehensive hydrographic database for Bangladesh’s maritime boundaries. He made this statement in a message on the occasion of ‘World Hydrography Day-2025’ on Friday, June 20.
Dr. Yunus emphasized that to strengthen and prosper Bangladesh’s economy, it is essential to develop an effective and sustainable maritime policy through accurate seabed mapping. He extended his heartfelt greetings and congratulations to the Bangladesh Navy and all those involved in organizing the event, noting that this year’s theme, “Seabed Mapping: Enabling Ocean Action,” is highly relevant.
He stated that the Bay of Bengal plays a crucial role in Bangladesh’s economy, security, and environmental balance. Not only Bangladesh but also neighboring countries rely heavily on the Bay of Bengal for their economic prosperity. The current interim government is working toward transforming Bangladesh into a production-oriented and regional economic hub. To achieve this goal, accurate and updated hydrographic data is indispensable for the effective utilization of marine resources.
Dr. Yunus further noted that the Hydrographic Department of the Bangladesh Navy is tirelessly working on surveying maritime boundaries, preparing charts, ensuring the safety of domestic and foreign vessels, and exchanging data in accordance with international standards. The department’s efforts are particularly vital in determining Bangladesh’s continental shelf under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and in developing the blue economy.
He expressed hope that the Hydrography Department would play a more active role in port development, fisheries conservation, oil and gas exploration, and coastal disaster management, alongside ensuring military and naval security. Dr. Yunus wished for the success of all programs organized on the occasion of ‘World Hydrography Day-2025.’
