Dhaka, June 13, 2025 : Energy Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan has categorically stated that no new residential gas connections will be provided. Speaking to journalists on Friday morning after inspecting the Kailashtila-7 and Sylhet-10 gas wells in Golapganj Upazila, Sylhet, he remarked, “Even if you wait until doomsday, there is no possibility of providing piped gas to households. If I had the chance, I would disconnect gas from all homes in Dhaka.”
Khan highlighted the significant wastage of gas, noting that it is inappropriate to supply to households when industries and factories face shortages. He emphasized that shutting off residential connections is necessary to curb this wastage.
Addressing the long-standing demand for residential gas in Sylhet, the adviser said the government plans to supply low-cost LPG cylinders in areas where gas extraction occurs. He also revealed that gas production is declining by approximately 200 million cubic feet annually, increasing reliance on imported LNG. Efforts are underway to boost domestic production to reduce import dependency.
Accompanying the adviser during the inspection were Additional Secretary of the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry Md. Khalid Ahmed, Petrobangla Chairman Rehsanul Islam, BAPEX SGFL Managing Director Md. Soheb Ahmad, Additional Secretary Monir Hossain, and officials from the Kailashtila Gas Field and MST Plant.
Currently, the Kailashtila-7 and Sylhet-10 gas wells supply 16 million cubic feet of gas daily to the national grid.
