Russia Condemns Israel’s Attack on Iran as "Unacceptable" and a Violation of International Law

Moscow, June 13, 2025 – Russia has strongly condemned Israel’s recent military strikes on Iran, labeling them as "unacceptable" and "provocative." The Kremlin stated that the attacks, which targeted Iran’s nuclear facilities, ballistic missile factories, and military command centers, were unprovoked and violated the United Nations Charter. Russia also accused Western nations of fueling hostility and fear toward Iran, escalating tensions in the Middle East, according to Reuters.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov expressed deep concern over the strikes, noting that they threaten regional stability and undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts. Russia highlighted that the attacks disrupt negotiations between Washington and Moscow aimed at addressing Iran’s nuclear program transparently. These talks were intended to build trust between Washington and Tehran by reducing Iran’s enriched uranium stockpiles and repurposing it for civilian nuclear energy.
Israel, on Friday, June 13, claimed its operation, dubbed "Operation Rising Lion," was aimed at preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons. The Israeli Air Force conducted pre-dawn strikes on critical infrastructure in Tehran, targeting nuclear sites, missile factories, and military command centers. According to a report by Anadolu Agency, citing Iran’s Revolutionary Guard-run Fars News, the attacks resulted in at least 78 deaths and 329 injuries, with the actual toll likely higher.
Russia emphasized that diplomacy and dialogue are the only viable solutions to address concerns over Iran’s nuclear program. The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a detailed statement condemning Israel and Western nations for their actions, describing the use of force as a violation of international law and a threat to civilian lives and regional security. Moscow urged all parties to exercise restraint to prevent the Middle East from descending into a full-scale war.
Meanwhile, Russia noted that a potential round of nuclear talks between Washington and Iran is scheduled for Sunday, June 15, in Oman. The Kremlin stressed the importance of continuing these discussions to avoid further escalation.
The strikes have heightened tensions across the Middle East, with countries like Saudi Arabia and Turkey also reacting to the developments. Israel’s operation reportedly involved years of preparation, including the establishment of a drone base near Tehran by Mossad agents. The drones were activated overnight, targeting missile launchers and crippling Iran’s air defense systems, leaving the country unable to mount an immediate counterattack, according to a senior Israeli security official cited by The Times of Israel.
Russia and Iran have grown closer in recent years, culminating in a 20-year strategic partnership agreement signed in January by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. However, Moscow has made it clear that the agreement does not include mutual defense commitments, signaling its reluctance to be drawn into a broader Middle East conflict.
