Prospect of Meeting Between Chief Adviser and Tarique Rahman in the UK

Dhaka, June 10, 2025: Chief Adviser of the interim government, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has departed Dhaka for a four-day official visit to the United Kingdom. The Emirates Airlines flight carrying Dr. Yunus and his entourage left Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 7:30 PM on Monday, June 9, as confirmed by his Press Secretary, Shafiqul Alam.
A significant highlight of this visit is the potential meeting between Dr. Yunus and Tarique Rahman, Acting Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Senior BNP leaders in the UK have confirmed that a meeting is likely to take place in London on the morning of June 13.
The visit includes high-profile engagements, with Dr. Yunus expected to meet King Charles III, who has nominated him for the prestigious King Charles III Harmony Award 2025 in recognition of his lifelong contributions to promoting peace, sustainability, and harmony between people and the environment. The award ceremony will be held at St. James’s Palace in London on June 12. Additionally, Dr. Yunus is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, as well as discussions with Foreign Secretary David Lammy, senior ministers, political leaders, and influential business figures.
The visit will emphasize the UK’s support for Bangladesh’s democratic transition and efforts to recover laundered money. Dr. Yunus is expected to return to Bangladesh on June 14.
