Khulna, June 25, 2025: On Wednesday (June 25), members of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, National Citizens Party (NCP), and ‘Student-People’ locked the main gate of the Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) headquarters in protest. The action was taken in response to the alleged release of Sub-Inspector (SI) Sukanta Das, who was detained for his alleged involvement in attacks during the July uprising.
The protest began at noon, with demonstrators surrounding the KMP headquarters. Receiving no response from the police, the agitators demanded the resignation of the KMP Commissioner. They also blocked the road in front of the main gate, halting access to the city from Rupsa. The protesters raised various slogans against the police.
According to reports, on Tuesday (June 24) afternoon, SI Sukanta was taken into custody by Khanjahan Ali Thana police from the Eastern Gate area of the city. However, he was later not found in any police station, leading to allegations that he was released. KMP sources stated that SI Sukanta had served at Sonadanga Thana for a long time before being transferred to Khulna Sadar Thana in 2023. Following the mass uprising, he was transferred first to Dhaka and later to Chuadanga. On Tuesday, he had come to Khulna to testify in a case and was reportedly assaulted while returning.
KMP Commissioner Zulfikar Ali Haider told Kalbela, “SI Sukanta is a police officer, not a fugitive. He is currently under the Chuadanga district police. The Chuadanga Police Superintendent will take action against him. If necessary, administrative measures will be taken from police headquarters.” He added that Sukanta was rescued from the angry mob, provided medical treatment, and handed over to the Chuadanga district police.
