Ali Riaz Hopes to Finalize National Charter by Day After Tomorrow

The National Consensus Commission is aiming to conclude the second phase of dialogues with political parties by July 31, said Professor Ali Riaz, Vice-Chairman of the Commission. He announced that the points of consensus reached during the first and second phases of discussions will be sent to political parties today or tomorrow. Speaking at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Tuesday, during the opening remarks of the 21st day of the second phase of dialogues, Ali Riaz expressed optimism about finalizing the national charter by the day after tomorrow.

The agenda for the day’s discussions included issues related to the caretaker government, women’s representation in parliament, and provisions for the appointment of the Comptroller and Auditor General and the Ombudsman. Ali Riaz mentioned that a draft of the July Charter has been shared with the political parties, and the Commission is awaiting their feedback by tomorrow. “We hope to send the agreed-upon points from the initial phase to the political parties by today or tomorrow. Combined with the consensus reached so far in the second phase, we aim to finalize the charter by the day after tomorrow,” he said.

Ali Riaz further stated that the Commission intends to wrap up the dialogues by July 31, ensuring that all agreed-upon issues are clearly outlined and incorporated into the charter. Regarding new proposals on the caretaker government from several political parties, he noted, “Each party has its own perspective, and we are working to integrate these proposals and move forward.” The meeting, moderated by Monir Haider, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser, was attended by Commission members Safar Raj Hossain, Justice Emdadul Haque, Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, and Dr. Ayub Mia.
