Attempted Attack on Mirza Fakhrul’s Brother in Thakurgaon, Car Vandalized

In Thakurgaon, BNP activists allegedly attacked the car of Mirza Foysal Amin, the younger brother of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. The incident occurred on Saturday evening at the Samiruddin Smriti College ground in Baliadangi Upazila, following a BNP upazila conference. While Mirza Foysal Amin, the district BNP general secretary, was unharmed, the front and rear windows of his car were shattered.

According to Baliadangi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shawkot Ali Sarker, tensions had been simmering since the afternoon over the announcement of election results. As Mirza Foysal Amin was leaving after declaring the results, agitated BNP activists threw chairs at his vehicle, damaging its front and rear windows. He was quickly escorted to safety. One BNP activist was injured during the incident and received treatment at the Upazila Health Complex.

Sources within the BNP revealed that the conflict stemmed from the Baliadangi Upazila BNP president election, conducted via secret ballot. Candidates Syed Alam and Abu Hayat Nurunnabi each received 242 votes. Supporters of Syed Alam alleged that district BNP leaders manipulated the results. Amid the tension, Mirza Foysal Amin reviewed the results and declared Syed Alam the winner, a decision opposed by Nurunnabi’s supporters. Rasheduzzaman, a former BNP leader accompanying Mirza Foysal, stated, “The attack came from behind, but we managed to protect him.” Attempts to contact Mirza Foysal Amin for comments were unsuccessful. T.M. Mahbubur Rahman, general secretary of Baliadangi Upazila BNP, said, “Some activists became agitated over the election results. We are not certain of the attackers’ identities, but it could be related to the losing side.”
