During the operation, Abul Kalam, who was assisting Sumon in crossing the border for a payment of one lakh taka, was also apprehended.
On Saturday (July 12), at noon, the BSF handed over the detainees to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at the Tamabil Border Outpost following a flag meeting. Subsequently, BGB personnel handed Mokhlesur Rahman Sumon over to the Gowainghat Police Station.
Reports indicate that Sumon, a resident of Imbardi village in Bhanga Upazila, Faridpur, had made a deal with Abul Kalam from Ujuhati village in Gowainghat Upazila, Sylhet, to facilitate his escape to India for one lakh taka. Sumon is an accused in a case related to attacks on students during the anti-discrimination student movement.
Gowainghat Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sarkar Tofayel Ahmed stated, "Legal proceedings against the detained individuals are underway."
