Bangladesh Clears $437 Million in Dues to Adani Power

Bangladesh has fully settled outstanding payments of $437 million owed to India’s Adani Power for electricity imports, resolving all pending issues related to transmission costs and the power purchase agreement. According to a report by PTI, this lump-sum payment, made in June, marks the highest single-time settlement by Bangladesh to the Indian company.

Citing sources in New Delhi, PTI stated that the payment clears all previous dues, transmission expenses, and disputes tied to the power purchase agreement. Bangladesh currently has no outstanding dues and has provided a Letter of Credit (LC) equivalent to two months’ bills, along with a sovereign guarantee for all payments. With no pending financial disputes, the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has requested Adani Power to maintain the scheduled electricity supply from both units of its Jharkhand plant. NDTV reported that Bangladesh has been consistently clearing dues over the past three to four months, with payments ranging between $90 million and $100 million each month.
The agreement to procure electricity from Adani Power was signed on November 5, 2017, for a 25-year term. Under this deal, Adani Power constructed a $2 billion coal-based power plant in Godda, Jharkhand, to supply electricity to Bangladesh.
