Italian PM Giorgia Meloni to Visit Dhaka on August 30 to Strengthen Bilateral Ties

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is set to arrive in Dhaka on August 30 for a brief visit aimed at bolstering bilateral relations, multiple sources have confirmed to Kalbela. This will mark her first visit to Dhaka and the first by a European head of government since the interim government assumed office.

The possibility of Meloni’s visit was first discussed in May when Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi visited Dhaka on a state visit. During meetings with government policymakers, the potential for this visit and joint preparations were explored. Following diplomatic communications, the visit has now been finalized.

A senior government official told Kalbela that preparations for the visit are underway. Meloni is expected to arrive on August 30 and hold a bilateral meeting with the Chief Adviser on August 31. Her visit will be short, with a scheduled departure in the early hours of September 1.

**Key Discussion Points**: Every year, many Bangladeshi migrants aspire to relocate to Italy, but a high visa rejection rate persists due to misinformation. Italy has repeatedly emphasized the need for regular and safe migration pathways, and this issue is expected to be a focal point of discussions, according to sources. Additionally, talks will cover measures to combat human trafficking, as well as trade and investment opportunities. Sources indicate that the Memorandum of Understanding on Migration and Mobility, already signed between the two nations, may receive implementation guidelines during this visit.
An inter-ministerial coordination meeting to finalize preparations and outline various aspects of the Italian Prime Minister’s visit is expected to be held soon.
