A Bangladeshi passenger became part of a sensational incident at Dubai Airport after mistakenly taking a bag containing diamonds worth Tk 30 million and bringing it to Bangladesh. Fortunately, due to swift investigation and international cooperation, the valuable bag was successfully returned to its rightful owner.
The incident occurred when a businessman in Dubai was traveling to another country with four bags containing precious diamonds for an exhibition. At the airport, he collected three of his bags but mistakenly picked up a Bangladeshi passenger’s bag instead of his fourth one.
Conversely, the Bangladeshi passenger, assuming it was their own, took the diamond-filled bag to Bangladesh. The mix-up happened due to the similar color and design of the bags during scanning.
When the businessman reached his destination and opened the bag, he found only ordinary clothes inside, with no trace of the diamonds. Realizing the mistake, he immediately returned to Dubai and lodged a complaint with the police.
Upon receiving the complaint, Dubai Police reviewed CCTV footage and identified the Bangladeshi passenger. They then contacted the Bangladesh Embassy in Dubai and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which coordinated with the relevant authorities in Bangladesh.
The Bangladeshi passenger, upon realizing the error, willingly agreed to return the bag. As a result, the businessman recovered his diamond-filled bag intact.
In a statement, Dubai Police said, “The bags of the businessman and the Bangladeshi passenger were almost identical in appearance, which led to the mix-up. However, the honesty of both individuals and the prompt actions of the authorities of both countries ensured no loss of the diamonds.”
The businessman expressed heartfelt gratitude to Dubai Police and Bangladeshi authorities for recovering his Tk 30 million worth of diamonds.
