BNP Does Not Want to Undermine July Uprising: Mirza Fakhrul

 শেখ হাসিনার সঙ্গে আওয়ামী লীগেরও বিচার করা উচিত : মির্জা ফখরুল

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stated that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) does not wish to downplay the significance of the July mass uprising. Valuing this historic event, the party submitted its opinions on the July Charter to the government on Wednesday night.

Speaking as the chief guest at a discussion organized by the Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) and Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) at the National Press Club on Thursday (July 10), Fakhrul made these remarks. He said, “BNP believes in the power of the people. We welcome reforms, but if anyone claims BNP is obstructing reforms, that is a misinterpretation. Over the past 17 years, around 60 lakh leaders and activists have faced false cases, and approximately 20,000 have been killed. This reality cannot be ignored. Those who deny this are turning a blind eye to democracy.” Fakhrul further noted, “The people of this country have sacrificed their lives for elections and voting rights. Therefore, I believe there will be no further issues regarding elections. The government’s directive to prepare for elections by December is commendable. We are optimistic that arrangements will be made for a fair and acceptable election, allowing the people to truly exercise their voting rights.” Addressing border killings and push-ins, Fakhrul said, “People are being killed at the border regularly, and push-ins are ongoing. This cannot be taken lightly. The government must negotiate firmly with India on this issue.”
The meeting, chaired by DUJ President Md. Shahidul Islam and moderated by General Secretary Khurshid Alam, was attended by BNP Standing Committee member Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain, Advisory Council member Abdus Salam, Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Professor Mia Golam Parwar, Nagorik Oikya President Mahmudur Rahman Manna, and National Press Club President and Kaler Kantho Editor Kabi Hasan Hafiz, among others.
