Brother-in-Law Sentenced to Death for Slitting Sister-in-Law's Throat in Netrokona

In Netrokona, a court has sentenced Md. Rasel Mia (28) to death for brutally murdering his sister-in-law by slitting her throat. Additionally, he has been fined Tk 50,000.

On Thursday (July 24, 2025), the verdict was delivered by District and Sessions Judge Md. Hafizur Rahman.

The convicted, Md. Rasel Mia, hails from Pashchimpara village in Purbadhala Upazila, Netrokona, and is the son of Md. Alal Uddin. The victim, Lipi Akter, was the daughter of Aftab Uddin Sarker from Jaria village. According to court documents and the case FIR, Rasel Mia was the cousin brother-in-law of the victim, Lipi Akter, and they lived in adjacent rooms in the same house. Lipi’s husband, Md. Azizul Islam, serves in the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and resides in Panchagarh, leaving Lipi alone at home. Taking advantage of her husband’s absence, Rasel Mia repeatedly harassed Lipi Akter with inappropriate proposals, both at home and in public spaces. When Lipi informed her husband, Rasel’s brother, and his parents about the harassment, Rasel escalated his actions out of resentment. On the night of October 3, 2020, around 9:30 PM, after having dinner, Lipi went to sleep in her room in the western part of the house with her son, Alif. At approximately 2:30 AM on October 4, Rasel Mia stealthily entered her room under the cover of darkness and slit her throat with a sharp antique knife, killing her. Later, Rasel confessed to the crime in court, admitting his guilt. He was sentenced to death in the presence of the court.
A total of 15 witnesses testified in the case. The state was represented by Public Prosecutor Md. Abul Hashem, while Advocate Anisur Rahman represented the accused.
