Chief Adviser Orders Compilation of List of Victims Killed in Awami League-Related Violence Over Past 15 Years

Dhaka, July 24, 2025: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has directed the preparation of a list of individuals killed in attacks by terrorists associated with the Awami League, including its student wing Chhatra League, and by state forces under the directives of the then-government over the 15 years prior to the July 2024 Student-Worker-People’s Uprising.

On Thursday (July 24), Professor Muhammad Yunus met with the family of martyred BUET student Abrar Fahad at the state guesthouse Jamuna. The family included Abrar’s father, Mohammad Barkat Ullah, his younger brother, Abrar Faiyaz, and his uncle, Mohammad Mofazzal Hossain.

During the meeting, Abrar Fahad’s family urged the Chief Adviser to compile a list of those killed in attacks by Awami League and its affiliated organizations’ terrorists before the July 2024 uprising and to investigate each incident thoroughly. They also requested the government to expedite the trial process for Abrar Fahad’s murder case. Mohammad Barkat Ullah, Abrar’s father, said, “My son was brutally beaten to death by terrorists for speaking out for the country, against unfair water distribution. His mother still cries out for him. No mother should have to endure the pain of losing a child; no mother’s heart should be left empty.” He also highlighted the long-standing demand of locals in Kushtia for a bridge over the Garai River, noting that the absence of a bridge causes significant hardship for around 30,000 people. He urged the Chief Adviser to take steps to construct the bridge. Abrar Faiyaz, a third-year BUET student and Abrar’s younger brother, appealed to make educational institutions more student-friendly. He said, “Our educational institutions are still not student-friendly. There is a shortage of necessary labs, equipment, and other facilities for studies. We have high expectations from the interim government, and we want it to take steps to make educational institutions student-friendly.” He also called for strict measures to stop ragging at BUET, stating, “This is not the first incident of oppression at BUET. Previous incidents have occurred, and they need to be investigated and brought to justice.” Chief Adviser Professor Yunus remarked, “The brutal killing of Abrar Fahad shocked the entire nation. Justice for this incident will be ensured. A list of those killed in attacks by Awami League and its affiliated organizations’ terrorists before the July 2024 uprising will be prepared, and each incident will be investigated. Additionally, investigations into the killings carried out by state forces under the then-government’s directives are already underway. The government has already taken steps in this regard.
