Police have identified the accused as Dr. Christopher Mains. Reports suggest that Mains, who had been struggling with mental health issues and crippling debt, devised this extreme plan to alleviate his financial burdens.
In 2019, Mains informed insurance companies that he had lost both legs due to sepsis and subsequently filed a claim for compensation. Initially, the insurance companies accepted his claim.
