Thailand’s Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin stated that Thursday’s violence resulted in the deaths of 11 Thai civilians and one soldier. The Thai military reported that among the deceased was an 8-year-old child. At least three areas were targeted by Cambodian shelling.
The Health Minister told reporters that Cambodia’s actions, including the attack on the hospital, should be considered war crimes.
According to reports, four civilians were killed in a Cambodian military shelling at a petrol station in Ban Phu town, Kantharalak district, Sisaket province, approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the border. In Surin province, Kabchoeng district chief Suthirot Charoenthanasak told Reuters that two people were killed when a house was hit by Cambodian shelling.
The district authorities have evacuated around 40,000 civilians from 86 villages near the border to safer locations. Priority has been given to children, the elderly, and women, who have been moved to secure bomb shelters. Some Thai residents have taken shelter in temporary bunkers made of concrete, sandbags, and car tires.
In response to the civilian deaths caused by Cambodia’s rocket attacks, the Thai military retaliated by deploying F-16 fighter jets to strike targets across the border.
The situation escalated on Thursday morning after gunfire exchanges between the two countries’ forces in a disputed border area. The Thai military reported that one of their fighter jets entered Cambodian airspace, conducted shelling, and destroyed military targets.
In a statement on social media, the Thai forces announced that they had destroyed Cambodia’s “Special Military Region Commands 8 and 9” bases.
