Intruder Attacks Police Inside Station, Found Dead in Pond

The body of an assailant who stabbed a police officer inside the Saghata Police Station in Gaibandha has been recovered from a pond. Police claim the attacker had mental health issues.

On Friday (July 25) morning around 9:30 AM, the body was retrieved by the Saghata Fire Service team.

According to police and locals, on Thursday night around 10 PM, an individual attempted to snatch a weapon from the on-duty sentry, Sirajul Islam. When Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Mohsin Ali intervened to stop him, the assailant stabbed him, injuring his finger and forehead. As the injured officer raised an alarm, other police officers and locals rushed to the scene. The attacker fled and jumped into a pond near Saghata Pilot High School, hiding among water hyacinths. Due to the pond being covered with hyacinths, he could not be immediately located.

Since his disappearance in the pond, police, fire service personnel, and locals worked to find him. On Friday morning, the Fire Service team recovered the assailant’s body.

A local, Sohag Mia, said, “The boy seemed mentally unstable. Why else would he jump into a pond in the dark? Nobody here knows him. His body was recovered this morning, so we came to see.”

Mahmudul Hasan, Deputy Assistant Director of Gaibandha Fire Service and Civil Defence, said, “We have been working since the incident occurred. Our Saghata Fire Service team recovered the body this morning.”

Saghata Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Badsha Alam stated, “The attacker had mental health issues. He jumped into the hyacinth-covered pond and could not resurface. The Saghata Fire Service team recovered his body this morning. His identity is yet to be established.”
