Jamaat-e-Islami Holds ‘National Conference’ at Suhrawardy Udyan Today, Leaders and Activists March in Processions

Dhaka, July 19, 2025 – Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is set to hold a ‘National Conference’ at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital today, Saturday, starting at 2:00 PM. The event will be chaired by the party’s Ameer, Shafiqur Rahman, with central leaders delivering speeches.

Since Friday evening, leaders and activists of the party began gathering at the venue. From early Saturday morning, processions from various parts of the capital have been heading toward the conference site, with participants chanting slogans for a successful event. Crowds of Jamaat leaders and activists have also been observed on the metro rail.

In a press conference held on Thursday, Jamaat-e-Islami announced that they have invited leaders from various political parties, including BNP, NCP, and Islami Andolan, to speak at the event. According to party leaders, this is the first time since Bangladesh’s independence that Jamaat is holding a conference at Suhrawardy Udyan. The event takes place amid political instability triggered by an attack by the banned Awami League and its student wing, Chhatra League, on an NCP rally in Gopalganj. To ensure a large turnout, the party has made arrangements for transportation via rail, waterways, and roads.
Jamaat-e-Islami has stated that the conference will focus on key demands, including ensuring a free, fair, neutral, and peaceful election with equal opportunities for all, implementing fundamental reforms, fulfilling the July Charter and Declaration, and holding national elections under a proportional representation (PR) system.
