July Uprising Spirit Must Not Go in Vain, Symbolizes Our Unity" - Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiron

Dhaka, July 31, 2025: The July Uprising, a landmark event in Bangladesh’s history, was a manifestation of accumulated grievances against years of oppression, torture, humiliation, deprivation, abductions, murders, and killings. Speaking at an event organized by Hazaribagh Government College to commemorate the first anniversary of the July Mass Uprising, Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiron, Chairman of Debate for Democracy, described the uprising as a pivotal document in the nation’s history, second only to the Liberation War, and a symbol of unity.

Kiron highlighted the unprecedented brutality during the uprising, noting that more lives were lost to the bullets of the Awami League government’s police and goons than in the language movement. He condemned the fallen Awami regime for obstructing medical treatment for the injured and creating hurdles in the burial of victims, with reports of bodies being piled up and burned after being shot. The program, chaired by the college principal, Professor Shamima Akter, also featured speeches by Munshi Humayun Kabir, Head of the Chemistry Department, and Shahana Begum, Secretary of the College Teachers’ Council. Kiron further stressed the need for justice, not only for the July killings but for all atrocities committed during the 15-year Awami regime. He noted that the Honorable Chief Adviser has already ordered the compilation of a list of victims of abductions, murders, and torture, including the Shapla Square and BDR massacres, to ensure exemplary punishment. The July Uprising saw unprecedented participation from students, workers, rickshaw pullers, laborers, and people from all walks of life, led by the youth. Kiron urged the young and old forces that contributed to the fall of Hasina to remain united to prevent destabilization by the allies of the fallen regime. He cautioned that ideological differences in politics must not escalate into conflicts. The event concluded with prize distributions for competitions in graffiti, drawing, essay writing, and debates, followed by a captivating cultural program.
