Mamun Samrat, a 43-year-old man accused in 23 cases, was brutally hacked to death in Cumilla’s Daudkandi. The incident took place around 11 PM on Friday at the Gouripur Bus Stand area along the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway.
Mamun, son of Mosharraf Hossain alias Mokbul Member from Sholakandi village in Cumilla’s Titas Upazila, resided in a rented house in the Gouripur Bazar area.
Following the attack, personnel from Daudkandi Model Police Station, Daudkandi Highway Police Station, and army members rushed to the scene. Police recovered Mamun and took him to Daudkandi Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
According to Mohammad Rashed Khan Chowdhury, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Daudkandi Highway Police Station, Mamun was traveling to Cox’s Bazar with four women. He boarded a Relax Transport bus from Dhaka’s Jatrabari without a ticket. When the bus reached Gouripur Bus Stand around 11 PM, Mamun purchased a ticket for Tk 1,800 from the counter and bought a bottle of water from a nearby shop. As he was about to board the bus again, a group of assailants, who were lying in wait, attacked him from behind with sharp weapons, targeting his head and neck, before fleeing the scene.
Daudkandi Model Police Station OC Junayet Chowdhury told Prothom Alo that Mamun Samrat faced 23 cases, including charges of murder, drug trafficking, and kidnapping, and had been imprisoned multiple times. His body was sent to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for an autopsy on Saturday morning. Mamun’s parents visited the police station, and preparations for filing a murder case are underway. The police are reviewing CCTV footage from the bus counter to determine the motive behind the killing. The OC noted that Mamun sustained injuries from sharp weapons to his head and neck, suggesting a planned murder. Authorities are optimistic about unraveling the mystery behind the killing soon.
On condition of anonymity, several local residents claimed that Mamun was involved in drug trafficking, extortion, and leading a teenage gang in the Gouripur area, which may have prompted the attack.
Police and local sources revealed that on May 13, Mamun was arrested during a raid at a rented house in Gouripur Bazar, where a large quantity of drugs and locally made weapons were recovered. He was sent to jail but later returned to the area after securing bail.
