National University Introduces "Shahid Smriti Scholarship" to Commemorate 2024 Student-Public Uprising

In honor of the student-public uprising against fascism that took place in July-August 2024, the National University has launched the "Shahid Smriti Scholarship" as part of a month-long program. Under this initiative, 2,024 students from various institutions affiliated with the university will receive a scholarship of BDT 6,000 each annually.

According to university sources, the scholarship will be provided as a one-time payment each year. Priority will be given to meritorious students who are financially disadvantaged, marginalized, underprivileged, or have special needs. The scholarship program will be offered regularly every year, with the potential to increase the number of recipients and the amount in the future.

The initiative is a tribute to the 32 students of the National University who, among others, sacrificed their lives during the July-August 2024 uprising. Their extraordinary patriotism, spirit of protest, and self-sacrifice have created an unforgettable chapter in the nation’s history. The scholarship aims to keep their memory alive and inspire future generations to draw motivation from their ideals, according to university officials.
The program was officially inaugurated on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, by Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus at a ceremony held at the Korobi Hall in the Chief Adviser’s Office in Tejgaon, Dhaka. During the event, Dr. Yunus handed over scholarship checks to three students, marking the formal launch of the initiative. For the first time, 2,024 students from 725 colleges across the country have received this scholarship.
