Police Prioritize Arrest of Suspects Identified in CCTV Footage in Khulna Youth Leader Murder Case
The mystery surrounding the murder of Mahbubur Rahman Mollah, former vice-president of the Daulatpur Thana Jubo Dal, remains unresolved. However, police suspect that close associates of an extremist leader may be involved, based on the nature of the incident and analysis of CCTV footage. On Friday, July 11, 2025, Mahbubur Rahman Mollah was shot and had his leg veins slashed outside his home in Khulna’s Mahheshwarpasha West Para, resulting in his death. Police have analyzed CCTV footage from the vicinity, identifying several individuals. Still images from the footage, which have spread on social media platforms like Facebook, reportedly show associates of extremist leader Humayun Kabir, alias Huma. Local residents and police have acknowledged the presence of these individuals in the images. A police official told “The full mystery has not yet been unraveled, and the exact motive remains unclear. However, the CCTV footage shows Huma’s associates on a motorcycle. They are the primary suspects at this stage, and arresting one of them could provide more clarity. We are also exploring other possible angles.” Mahbubur Rahman Mollah, a resident of Mahheshwarpasha West Para, was cleaning his private car in front of his house when three assailants on a motorcycle shot him and cut his leg veins to ensure his death. One of the attackers was wearing a helmet. Following the incident, Mahbubur’s father filed a murder case at the Daulatpur police station. So far, police have arrested two individuals in connection with the case. Local residents, based on the circulated still images, have identified the person in the middle of the motorcycle as Asif Mollah and the driver as Kazi Raihan Islam. The individual at the back appears different in two images, suggesting additional individuals may have been present as “backup” during the attack. Police, local residents, and political sources report that after the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024, Mahbubur was involved in reckless behavior, land grabbing, and controlling syndicates related to property sales. As a close associate of a prominent BNP leader and a relative of an extremist leader, he wielded significant influence in the area. This led to conflicts with local emerging criminals and extremists over territorial dominance, drug trafficking, and extortion, making him a target for multiple groups. The Daulatpur, Deyana, and Teligati areas have seen several murders linked to extremist groups vying for control. On March 15, 2025, extremist leader Sheikh Shahinul Haque (Big Shahin) was shot dead. Previously, Mahbubur was associated with a group that included Humayun Kabir (Huma), Kazi Raihan, Asif Mollah, Imon Hawladar, Hossain Dhali, and Arman. This group has since split into two factions: one led by Humayun, including Raihan, Asif, and Imon, and the other comprising Hossain Dhali and Arman. In June 2024, the murder of Yuba League leader Arif in the Khanabari area near Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) also involved members of these factions. Several months ago, Humayun, Raihan, Asif, and Imon were arrested in a weapons case in Bagerhat. Asif, Raihan, and Imon were released on bail last month, while Humayun remains in custody. Hossain Dhali and Arman are also in jail for a separate case. Sources indicate that Arman is a relative of Mahbubur, who was managing their legal affairs, leading to tensions with Humayun’s faction. A close political associate of Mahbubur told “Huma’s group believed Mahbubur had betrayed them to the authorities. He tried to clarify the misunderstanding by meeting Huma in prison, but the murder was planned from there.” Daulatpur Thana Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mir Atahar Ali said, “The investigation is ongoing, keeping the motives in mind. We have already arrested one individual named Sajal, who is being interrogated on remand. Another person, Alauddin, who was with Sajal on the day of the incident, has also been arrested. We are verifying their information and expect to apprehend the main culprits and uncover the full truth soon.
