A group of individuals, led by Banani Thana Yubadal Convener Monir Hossain, stormed Zakaria Hotel on Tuesday night and attacked two women. The incident, which has sparked widespread outrage, was captured in a viral video circulating on social media.
According to reports, the assault took place at Zakaria Hotel in Banani, Dhaka, under the leadership of Monir Hossain, who has since been expelled from Yubadal. A case has been filed at Banani Police Station, but no arrests have been made as of yet. The viral video shows a woman in a saree running down the hotel stairs, only to be intercepted and attacked by a man, causing her to fall to the floor. Another woman, also fleeing, is chased and pushed down by the attackers. The footage reveals 8 to 10 individuals participating in the assault, with sounds of vandalism, including breaking glass and furniture, audible in the background. The women can be heard screaming as the attackers continue their assault. **Police Response**: The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Banani Police Station, Md. Russel Sarwar, confirmed to *Prothom Alo* that Monir Hossain led the group into the hotel. A case was filed by the hotel authorities on Tuesday night. Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations), SN Md. Nazrul Islam, stated that a police operation is ongoing to apprehend the accused. **Yubadal’s Response**: Following public outrage over the viral video, Yubadal announced Monir Hossain’s expulsion from the organization, including his primary membership, on Thursday at around 8 PM. The organization issued a statement clarifying that it will not take responsibility for the actions of expelled members and instructed its leaders and workers to cut off all organizational ties with Monir. Yubadal also urged law enforcement to take necessary legal action. **Hotel Management’s Complaint**: According to the written complaint filed by Abu Bakar Siddique, Assistant General Manager of Zakaria International Restaurant and Bar, the incident stemmed from an altercation on Monday, June 30. Monir Hossain visited the restaurant around 8 PM and demanded a VIP cabin, which was already reserved for another guest. He was offered a regular table, where he dined and demanded a discount. Despite receiving a discounted bill, Monir expressed dissatisfaction and left after issuing threats. The following day, July 1, at around 8:40 PM, Monir returned with 20-25 individuals. They began vandalizing the restaurant, throwing glasses, breaking chairs, tables, CCTV monitors, and crockery. The group allegedly stole Tk 70,000 from the cash counter and liquor worth approximately Tk 5 lakh. When staff attempted to intervene, they were beaten and injured. The attackers threatened the hotel management, warning that reporting the incident to the police would force them to shut down their business. After the attack, injured staff received first aid, and the hotel reviewed CCTV footage before filing a complaint with Banani Police Station. The case names Monir and four others, with 20-25 unidentified individuals also implicated. The incident has drawn widespread condemnation on social media, with many criticizing the lack of immediate arrests and calling for stricter action against the perpetrators.Friday, July 4, 2025
