Allegations of Attack on Journalists by BNP Leader in Bhola

A BNP leader from Bhawaniapur Union in Bhola’s Daulatkhana Upazila has been accused of attacking Samay TV’s Bhola correspondent Nasir Uddin (Litton) and cameraman Utpal Debnath. The incident occurred around 3:00 PM on Friday, and a General Diary (GD) was filed at Daulatkhana Police Station in the evening.

The accused, Md. Rasel Kazi, is the organizational secretary of Bhawaniapur Union BNP. Multiple attempts to contact him via mobile phone went unanswered. According to the GD, around 3:00 PM on Friday, Samay TV’s senior associate reporter Nasir Uddin and cameraman Utpal Debnath went to Bhawaniapur to collect information on a cattle distribution program. During this time, some local individuals began verbally abusing them. The complaint further states that the accused suddenly became agitated and started physically assaulting Nasir Uddin and the cameraman. They were also threatened. The attackers snatched and damaged a camera in Nasir Uddin’s possession, causing an estimated loss of around one lakh taka. When locals intervened, the attackers fled the scene. Speaking to *Prothom Alo* over the phone, Nasir Uddin said he had gone to Rasel Kazi’s residence in Bhawaniapur to report on a cattle distribution program for fishermen, as two individuals from that household had received cattle. However, upon entering the premises, Rasel Kazi attacked them and damaged the camera. The journalists were held captive for 20 minutes, during which their camera, mobile phone, and other equipment were seized. Nasir Uddin added that Rasel Kazi accused them of entering the premises without permission, which led to the attack. The journalists were forced to comply with the attackers’ demands during the ordeal. They were eventually released through the mediation of a local individual. Daulatkhana Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Zillur Rahman stated that legal action would be taken based on the investigation.
