Attack and Vandalism at Bangladesh Consulate in New York by Awami League Supporters

New York, August 25, 2025: Activists and supporters of the United States chapter of the Awami League allegedly attacked and vandalized the Bangladesh Consulate in New York. The incident occurred under the suspicion that Mahfuz Alam, Information and Broadcasting Adviser to the interim government of Bangladesh, was present inside the consulate.

Mushfiqul Fazal Ansari, Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Mexico with the rank of Senior Secretary, strongly condemned the attack and called for an immediate investigation and legal action. In a statement, he said, “A group of miscreants supported by the Awami League carried out an attack and vandalism at the Bangladesh Consulate in New York today. Immediate legal action against them is essential.”

He further expressed confidence that Bangladeshi officials in the United States would take necessary steps in coordination with relevant authorities. Addressing the U.S. administration, Ansari emphasized, “It is the responsibility of the host country to ensure the safety of all Bangladeshi missions and embassy personnel abroad. Such a reprehensible attack by supporters of Bangladesh’s ousted dictator on U.S. soil, a key partner in Bangladesh’s democracy and economic development, is utterly unacceptable.”
Several videos circulating on social media captured the attack, though Adviser Mahfuz Alam was not seen in any of the footage.
