In Gopalganj’s Kotalipara, an attack on Moniruzzaman Jewel, a journalist from the newspaper *Amar Desh*, has been reported, allegedly carried out by leaders and activists of the upazila’s Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal. The journalist was seriously injured in the attack.
The incident occurred around 7 PM on Friday (August 15) in front of the Kotalipara Upazila Shilpakala Academy. The injured journalist has been sent to Dhaka for advanced medical treatment.
According to sources, the attack stemmed from resentment over a news report published by Moniruzzaman Jewel, which angered several leaders and activists of the upazila’s Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal. While Jewel was in the upazila complex for professional work on Friday evening, he was ambushed near the Shilpakala Academy. The attack was allegedly led by Mannan Sheikh, member secretary of the upazila Jubo Dal, along with Niloy Hawladar Mostafa, member secretary of the upazila Chhatra Dal, and Jubo Dal activist Bayezid Hawladar, accompanied by 30 to 40 members of Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal. During the attack, senior leaders of the upazila BNP, including general secretary Abul Bashar Hawladar and organizing secretary Chholeman Sheikh, were present at the scene. Later, Mizanur Rahman Bulu, a journalist from *Kaler Kantho*, along with others, intervened to rescue Jewel from the attackers and took him to a hospital in critical condition.
Kotalipara Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Hafizur Rahman stated that police were dispatched to the scene upon receiving the news, and efforts were made to contact Jewel. He added that they had spoken with Jewel’s brother, and legal action would be taken if a formal complaint is received from Jewel’s side.
