Dhaka: The Economic Affairs Advisory Committee has granted policy approval for the construction of a land-based Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal in Matarbari, Cox’s Bazar under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The proposal was submitted by the Energy and Mineral Resources Division.
The approval was given during a meeting of the Economic Affairs Advisory Committee held at the Cabinet Division’s conference room on Tuesday (April 22). The meeting was chaired virtually by Economic Advisor Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed.
According to sources, the decision was taken to implement a 7.5 million ton per annum (MTPA) LNG terminal with a re-gasification capacity of 1000 MMSCFD to meet the country’s growing energy demands.
The feasibility study confirmed the economic viability of the project, and its potential to attract foreign investment, making PPP-based implementation a favorable option.
The LNG terminal will be constructed on 45.23 hectares of land in Matarbari as per the master plan developed by JICA. Given Bangladesh’s rising energy needs and the necessity of a stable fuel supply, the project is expected to significantly contribute to the country's energy infrastructure development.
