Bangladeshi-Origin Shariful Khan Promoted to Brigadier General in U.S. Air Force

Shariful M. Khan, a Bangladeshi-origin officer in the U.S. Air Force, has been promoted to the rank of Brigadier General. He assumed his new role on August 20, 2025, according to reports.

In June, Shariful Khan was among the officers nominated by President Donald Trump for promotion to Major General and Brigadier General ranks. According to a U.S. Department of Defense announcement, 15 military officers were nominated for Major General, and 55, including Khan, were selected for Brigadier General.

As per the U.S. Air Force website, Brigadier General Shariful Khan serves as the Staff Director for the critical “Golden Dome for America” program at the Pentagon. In this role, he coordinates strategy, policy, planning, positioning, and cross-functional matters related to the Golden Dome initiative. The U.S. is developing the “Golden Dome,” a state-of-the-art missile defense system stronger than the Iron Dome, designed to protect the country from missile attacks. On May 20, 2025, President Trump announced plans to advance this missile defense system, and Shariful Khan has been entrusted with overseeing its implementation. According to the U.S. Air Force, Khan received his commission from the United States Air Force Academy in 1997. He has gained operational experience as a satellite operator with expertise in space control, space systems, launch operations, and the National Reconnaissance Office. In 2001, he was stationed at Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait and was redeployed there in 2007, serving as a Deployment Commander for “Operation Silent Sentry.”
