Rajshahi, August 23, 2025 – Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin stated on Saturday that implementing the proportional representation (PR) system for elections is not feasible without amending the Constitution. Speaking at a views-exchange meeting with election officials at the Regional Public Administration Training Centre in Rajshahi, he emphasized that the Election Commission is bound by the Constitution and cannot adopt the PR system unless the law is changed.
"There is an ongoing debate among political parties on this issue, but I will not engage in it. The PR system can only be implemented if the law is amended," Nasir said.
The CEC announced that preparations are underway to hold the next parliamentary elections before Ramadan in February 2026. He warned that strict measures would be taken against any attempts to disrupt the polls, including canceling voting at any polling center that is forcibly occupied. "Those dreaming of capturing ballot boxes will be disappointed," he added, assuring that the law and order situation would improve as the elections approach.
Nasir also revealed plans to include the army among the law enforcement agencies deployed during the polls. Responding to questions about government interference, he firmly stated, "There has been no pressure from the government so far. If any pressure arises, I will resign. I will not stay in this position."
Commenting on the Awami League, Nasir noted that the party is currently inactive politically due to ongoing trials. "Their leaders cannot participate in elections during the trial proceedings. We will see what the verdict brings," he said.
The CEC further disclosed that the Election Commission has identified 5,700 officials who served in previous elections. Those found guilty of irregularities in past polls will not be retained. He provided detailed instructions to regional election officials on the commission’s preparations for the upcoming elections.
