Dhaka, August 23, 2025 – Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan has issued a stern warning, stating he will resign and disclose the identities of those responsible if the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections face any obstruction.
Speaking at a discussion meeting held at the TSC auditorium on Saturday to mark the university’s Black Day, the VC emphasized the significance of the DUCSU elections, noting that the entire nation is closely watching the process. “Organizing DUCSU elections is challenging under any circumstances. However, if there is any attempt to obstruct it, I will step down and reveal to the nation who is doing what,” he declared.
The meeting was attended by teachers, students, and university officials. Professor Niaz highlighted that preparations for the elections are underway under the guidance of the Election Commission, with multiple rounds of discussions already held with candidates.
“We have no permanent enemies. We are working with everyone, from law enforcement to the army, as they are important partners in today’s reality. Dhaka University is an institution of the people, and we will learn from history while respecting each other,” the VC added.
He further underscored the university’s historical role in raising its voice against injustice during critical moments in Bangladesh’s history and urged the current generation to uphold this tradition. The VC called on all stakeholders, including law enforcement agencies and the army, to collaborate in ensuring a fair and peaceful election.
Despite the somber observance of Black Day, a festive atmosphere prevails on campus as excitement builds for the upcoming polls. This year, a total of 509 candidates submitted nominations, of which 462 have been declared valid. Candidates can withdraw their nominations until August 25, with the final list set to be announced on August 26. Voting is scheduled for September 9.
Dhaka University observes Black Day annually to commemorate the repression faced by its teachers, students, and officials during the military-backed caretaker government’s actions from August 20-23, which sparked nationwide protests.
