Commerce Adviser Bashir, Pakistan’s Minister Khan Visit Chattogram Port, Praise Progress

Chattogram, August 23, 2025 – Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin and Pakistan’s Federal Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan visited Chattogram Port on Friday afternoon (August 22) and expressed satisfaction with the significant improvements and progress made by Bangladesh’s premier seaport.

During the visit, the dignitaries observed the port’s operational activities and performance in detail. Chairman of the Chattogram Port Authority (CPA), Rear Admiral S M Moniruzzaman, briefed the ministers on the port’s current operations, including container and cargo handling, labor management, foreign investment, and advancements in automation.

The CPA Chairman highlighted that the port handled a record number of containers last year, reduced vessel waiting times to zero to two days, and significantly decreased the average turnaround time for ships. He also noted remarkable progress in automation and digitalization initiatives. Pakistan’s Commerce Minister praised the advancements at Chattogram Port and shared insights into port operations in Pakistan, noting that reputed private operators such as Hutchison Port Group manage a container terminal at Karachi Port Trust, Abu Dhabi Port Authority operates a bulk terminal, and DP World handles operations at Port Qasim under long-term contracts. Minister Khan assured that steps would be taken to enhance export-import activities and introduce direct shipping routes between Bangladesh and Pakistan.
The visit was attended by Pakistan High Commission’s Commerce and Investment Attaché Zain Aziz, Commercial Officer Wakas Yasin, Additional Secretary of Bangladesh’s Commerce Ministry Naznin Kawser Chowdhury, and Director of the Bay Terminal Project at Chattogram Port, Commodore Mahfuzur Rahman.
