Compensation Demanded for Tragic Road Accident Claiming Seven Lives from Same Family

The Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST) has expressed profound grief and concern over the tragic deaths of seven individuals, including three children, in a microbus accident on the Chowmuhani-Lakshmipur regional highway in Noakhali’s Begumganj. BLAST has also demanded justice and compensation for the affected families.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday (August 6) by BLAST’s communication department, the organization highlighted the incident. The statement noted that a microbus lost control and plunged into a canal in the Chandraganj East Bazar area of the highway, resulting in the immediate deaths of seven people, including three children. BLAST described the accident as a case of “negligent homicide” and called for legal action against those responsible, accountability from relevant authorities, and justice for the victims’ families.

The statement further pointed out that, as part of the country’s reconstruction following the mass uprising of students and citizens in July 2024, students across the nation were engaged in ensuring road safety and traffic control. Despite this, the Road Transport Act of 2018, enacted in response to public demands, has not been fully implemented. Although the Act includes provisions for establishing a compensation fund for victims of negligent accidents, there has been no visible progress in its implementation. In this context, BLAST urged for a swift investigation, punishment of those responsible, and justice and compensation for the affected families.
BLAST also strongly demanded the full implementation of the Road Transport Act 2018, activation of the compensation fund, and strengthened monitoring and oversight of road management to ensure road safety.
