Bangladesh to Face New Tariff Rates in the U.S. Market Starting Today

Starting today, August 7, new tariff rates will be imposed on Bangladeshi products entering the U.S. market, affecting exports such as garments. This change will require Bangladesh to pay additional tariffs on various goods.

Last Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the final tariff rates for Bangladesh and other countries. As a result, the countervailing duty on Bangladesh was reduced from 35% to 20% following several rounds of negotiations with the U.S. administration.

In April, Trump had initially announced a 37% tariff on Bangladesh, which was later reduced to 35% in July. According to the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Bangladesh previously paid a tariff rate of 16.5% for exports to the U.S. With the new 20% additional tariff, the total tariff rate now stands at 36.5%, which will vary depending on specific products. The Export Promotion Bureau of Bangladesh notes that the U.S. is the largest single market for Bangladesh’s ready-made garments, with over 86% of the country’s exports to the U.S. consisting of garment products. In the fiscal year 2024-25, Bangladesh exported garment products worth $7.54 billion to the U.S. market.
