A court in Rangpur has ordered a three-day remand for four individuals arrested in connection with the mob lynching of two people suspected of being part of an "unconscious party" in Taraganj, Rangpur. The incident resulted in the deaths of the victims.
On Thursday (August 14), Senior Judicial Magistrate Krishna Kamal Roy issued the remand order. Court Inspector Aminul Islam stated that the case’s investigation officer, Rafiqul Islam, brought the accused to court under tight security and requested a five-day remand for each. After the hearing, the judge granted a three-day remand for each suspect.
The incident occurred on Saturday night around 9 PM in Bototoli, Sayar Union, Taraganj, where two individuals, Ruplal and Pradeep Kumar, were detained on suspicion of being part of an unconscious party. Illicit liquor and drugs were found in their possession. When some people fell ill while inspecting the substances, an angry mob took the duo to Burirhat High School field and beat them, leading to their deaths.
Ruplal’s wife, Malti Rani, filed a case naming 500 individuals as accused. On Monday (August 11), four suspects were arrested and sent to jail following a court order. Subsequently, the court granted their remand for interrogation.
The accused are Akhtarul Islam from Charakdanga Balapur, Aiyub Ali from Rahimapura, Rafiqul Islam from Burirhat Dangapara, and Ibadat Ali from Sayar Balapur.
In response to the incident, two sub-inspectors (SIs) and six constables have been temporarily suspended and confined to the police lines for alleged negligence. A probe committee has been formed, and the investigation officer was changed, with Taraganj Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) Rafiqul Islam assigned to the case.
Investigation officer Rafiqul Islam stated that the interrogation will follow court directives and expressed hope that questioning the suspects will aid in identifying others involved in the incident.
