Dhaka University Protest: Shoes Thrown at Celebrities’ Pictures Over Sheikh Mujib Posts

A protest was held at the foot of the Raju sculpture on the Dhaka University campus, where a group of enraged students and citizens threw shoes at pictures of several celebrities, labeling them as “cultural fascists” for expressing grief on social media over the death anniversary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The demonstration took place on Saturday (August 16) afternoon, organized as a protest against “Mujibism and cultural fascism.”

Participants targeted celebrities including Jaya Ahsan, Chanchal Chowdhury, Shakib Khan, Shakib Al Hasan, Farabi Hafiz, Abdul Noor Tushar, Nazifa Tushi, and Lincoln from the band Artcell, throwing shoes at their images while chanting slogans against them.

Mohammad Samiul Haque, a second-year MBBS student and participant, stated, “Over the past 16 years, the fascist government established fascism not only in social, economic, and political spheres but also in the cultural domain. This cultural fascism was built using the narrative of Mujibism.” He further added, “Through the mass uprising in July, students and the public sacrificed their blood to establish a fascism-free Bangladesh. Yet, within a year, so-called cultural personalities are attempting to revive the old ‘Bakshal and Mujibist’ narrative. Our program is a protest against their efforts to bring back cultural fascism.”
The protesters accused the celebrities who posted in remembrance of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on his death anniversary of attempting to re-establish “cultural fascism” in the country. Through this program, they expressed their distrust and resentment toward these celebrities.
