The ongoing movement by engineering students and professionals will persist with their three-point demands, announced Mohammad Waliullah, President of the Engineers’ Rights Movement. He stated that a meeting with journalists and a discussion to plan further actions will be held at 5:00 PM on Thursday at the Institute of Engineers Council Hall.
The announcement was made on Wednesday (August 27) around 10:30 PM at Shahbagh intersection.
Mohammad Waliullah condemned the police attack on their march towards the Yamuna, saying, “We strongly condemn the police assault on our movement today. Over 50 engineers and students have been injured, many of whom are receiving treatment in hospitals.”
He further clarified, “None of our three demands have been met so far. We will announce our next course of action during the meeting at 5:00 PM tomorrow at the Institute of Engineers Council Hall.”
Mohammad Mehedi Hasan, a Dhaka University student and convener of the Engineers’ Rights Movement, expressed frustration towards Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam. He said, “I am upset with my dear Hasnat Bhai and Sarjis Bhai. Hasnat Bhai shared a post this afternoon, seemingly unaware that Dhaka University has an engineering faculty with a department dedicated to it, despite studying there for so long.”
He added, “During today’s attack, two individuals were injured by grenade splinters in their legs and are now hospitalized. Four students from Dhaka University have also been injured.”
Zubair Ahmed, a student and activist of the Engineers’ Rights Movement, declared, “Our movement will continue until our demands are met. Tomorrow, all engineering universities will observe a complete shutdown. No classes or exams will take place.”
The three demands of the engineering students include: prohibiting diploma engineers from using the title “Engineer” before their names, ensuring diploma engineers are not promoted to the 9th grade, and prioritizing graduate engineers for entry into 10th-grade jobs.
