Chief Adviser of the interim government, Muhammad Yunus, announced that reforms have been made to various laws, including the Civil Law and the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. He stated that the government has recently approved the Code of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, which mandates that the family of a detained person must be informed as soon as possible within 12 hours of detention.
In his address to the nation on Tuesday (August 5) night, marking the “July Mass Uprising Day,” Yunus shared these remarks.
He further said that detained individuals must be allowed to meet with their lawyers. If a detained person becomes ill or injured during remand, they must be examined by a doctor, the cause of the injury must be identified, and necessary medical treatment must be provided.
Yunus added that provisions have been included to take legal action against police if they are found responsible in such cases. This law will significantly reduce harassment related to arrests and detentions, increase police accountability, and expedite judicial processes.
The Chief Adviser also noted that, based on the recommendations of the Police Reform Commission, any person visiting a police station to file a General Diary (GD) must have it accepted. No one can be turned away from a police station without their GD being recorded. Accordingly, the government has decided that GDs can now be filed online at all police stations across the country, eliminating complaints about GDs not being accepted.
