In a shocking incident in Bihar, India, a father has been accused of shooting and killing his son-in-law in public. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening in Darbhanga district. The victim, a 25-year-old nursing student named Rahul Kumar, was allegedly killed due to his marriage that defied caste norms.
According to police, the incident took place around 4:40 PM in the Benta police station area. Upon receiving reports of gunfire, police arrived at the scene, recovered Rahul’s body, and sent it for a post-mortem examination.
A senior police official stated, “The deceased, Rahul Kumar, was a nursing student. The accused, Premshankar Jha (45), is the father of Rahul’s wife, who is also a nursing student at Darbhanga Medical College Hospital (DMCH).” Preliminary investigations reveal that Rahul had married Premshankar’s daughter, Tannu Priya, in April.
Local authorities reported that after the shooting, an angry mob attacked Premshankar, who was later admitted to a hospital for treatment. In protest, students blocked the entrance to DMCH’s emergency department, but police dispersed the crowd.
Recalling the incident, Tannu Priya alleged, “While I was talking to Rahul on the phone after signing the college attendance register, I had gone toward the power grid due to a water shortage in the hostel. When I returned, I saw Rahul standing next to his motorcycle, likely waiting to go to his room for lunch. My father approached, pointed a gun at Rahul, and asked who owned the motorcycle. When Rahul said it was his, my father shot him in the chest in front of me and tried to flee. Rahul ran toward me and collapsed on my shoulder. We rushed him to the hospital.”
Tannu further claimed that other family members, including her two brothers, mother, grandmother, sister, and brother-in-law, might be involved in the incident. She added, “My father owns a clinic in Saharsa where illegal activities, including abortions, take place. He had previously beaten me with a belt, and Rahul rescued me, leading to our marriage. My father killed Rahul out of revenge.”
Rahul’s father, Ramesh Mondal, a resident of Supaul district, said he was informed by police around 5:30 PM on Tuesday that Rahul had been shot. “I reached the DMCH mortuary around 9 PM and saw my son’s body,” he said. Ramesh also alleged that Premshankar, along with his two sons, Ashwini Bhats and Avnish Bhats, had come to the college campus.
Ramesh told police that Premshankar had threatened his family earlier. “He had filed a case against us in Bongaon police station, and our statements were recorded in court,” Ramesh said. A few weeks ago, Premshankar had filed a complaint in Saharsa’s Bongaon police station, alleging that Rahul and his family had abducted his daughter. The complaint, filed on May 1, stated that Tannu went missing on April 27.
Premshankar claimed that CCTV footage showed his daughter leaving with a helmeted individual on a motorcycle, later identified as Rahul, her classmate at DMCH. He approached the college authorities, who instructed Rahul and Tannu to appear with their guardians within three days. When Premshankar visited Rahul’s family, he alleged they insulted him and prevented him from meeting his daughter. He further claimed that Rahul’s family said Tannu was with Rahul’s sister and brother-in-law and did not want to speak to her father. Premshankar’s complaint accused Rahul and his family of abducting his daughter with harmful intentions.
On Wednesday, Rahul’s family filed a case against Premshankar Jha, his wife Gunjan Kumari, and their sons Ashwini Bhats and Avnish Bhats. Police confirmed that investigations into both cases are ongoing.
