A local journalist was brutally attacked by extortionists while collecting news in Gazipur’s Sahapara area. The incident occurred around 3:30 PM on Wednesday. The journalist, identified as Anwar Hossain (35), a staff reporter for *Dainik Bangladesher Alo*, was seriously injured and is currently undergoing treatment in a hospital.
According to reports, a group of local youths were extorting money from CNG auto-rickshaw drivers in the Sahapara area of Gazipur city. While Anwar was gathering information about the extortion, he was allegedly attacked by the group in the presence of police. A video of the assault has gone viral on social media.
The video shows seven to eight individuals brutally beating Anwar. At one point, they struck his face and head with bricks, causing blood to stream from his face and forehead. Police officers were visible nearby but only intervened after some time to rescue Anwar and take him away in a vehicle.
Anwar’s mother, Anwara Sultana, filed a complaint with the Gazipur Sadar Police Station. The complaint alleges that the accused were extorting 30 to 40 taka daily from each auto-rickshaw in the Sahapara area. When Anwar went to report on the issue, the extortionists noticed him. Subsequently, 15 to 16 individuals, with the help of local extortionists, attacked him. They took him behind a tea stall with the intent to kill, striking his head with bricks and causing severe injuries. The attackers also stole two mobile phones and 26,250 taka from him. Police and locals later rescued Anwar in a critical condition and admitted him to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital.
Anwara Sultana said, “My son is a journalist. He was brutally beaten without any crime. I’m with him in the hospital, but we are terrified.” She appeared scared to speak with other journalists during this time.
Gazipur Sadar Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC), Mehedi Hasan, confirmed receiving the complaint and stated that operations are ongoing to arrest the culprits based on the video footage
