At least 15 people, including the Head of Human Resources (HR) of Al-Arafah Islami Bank, were injured in an attack by sacked employees demanding reinstatement. The protesters have blockaded the bank’s head office in Dhaka for eight consecutive working days.The incident occurred on Thursday (August 7) at around 4:15 PM near Dainik Bangla Mor in the capital. According to *Naya Diganta*, a security guard named Shahinur, who was critically injured, was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, while HR Head Amir Hossain was admitted to Square Hospital. Police rescued three Deputy Managing Directors (DMDs) of the bank from the attackers. A case is being prepared for filing at Paltan Police Station.
Eyewitnesses reported that due to the ongoing protests by sacked employees, some senior officials were working from the nearby Surma Tower instead of Al-Arafah Tower. At around 4:00 PM, HR Head Amir Hossain, along with three DMDs, were leaving Surma Tower to get into their vehicles when the protesters surrounded them. The mob attacked Amir Hossain, severely beating him. When security guards attempted to intervene, they were also assaulted and injured.
The injured were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Square Hospital, and Islami Bank Central Hospital. The victims include HR Head Amir Hossain, security guard Shahinur, Liton (25), Elias (38), Fahim (19), Rocky Hossain (26), Tofayel (32), Nur Alam (42), Arif (25), Zakir Hossain (25), Sagar (29), Lutfor, Faruk, and Sohel.
Recently, Al-Arafah Islami Bank sacked 547 officers who had been recruited without competitive examinations during the period when the bank was under the control of the controversial S Alam Group. Following an evaluation process conducted by the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) at Dhaka University, 1,414 officers were assessed, and 547 failed to qualify, leading to their termination. The sacked employees have been protesting to demand reinstatement.
