French Prosecutors Demand Trial for PSG Star Achraf Hakimi Over Rape Allegations

French prosecutors have called for a trial against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) star Achraf Hakimi following allegations of rape made against him in 2023. The Moroccan right-back has denied the accusations.

The prosecutor's office in Nanterre informed AFP that they have requested the investigating magistrate to refer the rape allegation to a criminal court. In a statement to AFP, the prosecutor’s office said, "It is now up to the investigating magistrate to make a decision within the framework of their mandate."

The allegations stem from an incident on February 25, 2023, when a 24-year-old woman accused Hakimi of raping her at his home in Boulogne-Billancourt, a suburb of Paris. According to the woman, Hakimi paid for her taxi to his residence while his wife and children were away on vacation. She later reported the alleged assault to the police, who questioned her. Although the woman did not initially wish to file a formal complaint, prosecutors decided to pursue charges against Hakimi.

The accuser told police that she met Hakimi via Instagram in January 2023. She claimed that on the night of the incident, Hakimi touched her without consent and subsequently raped her. A police source confirmed this account to AFP. The woman reportedly sent a text message to a friend asking for help, and the friend later picked her up from Hakimi’s residence.

Hakimi’s lawyer, Fanny Colin, told AFP that the prosecutors’ decision to push for a trial was “neither understandable nor meaningful based on the case’s evidence.” She added, “We remain calm, as we were at the start of this process, and we will explore all avenues for appeal.” Colin further claimed that Hakimi is a victim of “deliberately false accusations.”

The accuser’s lawyer, Rachel-Flore Pardo, told AFP, “There is no indication of false accusations in this case. My client is greatly relieved by the news [of Hakimi facing trial].”

Hakimi, born in Getafe, a southern suburb of Madrid, to Moroccan parents, played a key role in PSG’s 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in the Champions League final in May 2023, scoring the opening goal. The 26-year-old also made significant contributions to Morocco’s historic semifinal run at the 2022 World Cup, the first by an Arab nation.
