Gill Falls Short of History, England Now Faces Record Chase

Shubman Gill could not surpass Sunil Gavaskar's record for the highest runs scored by an Indian in a single Test series. Gavaskar scored 774 runs in a five-match series against West Indies in 1971, a mark Gill approached but fell short of with 754 runs. Despite missing the record, Gill’s tally ranks 19th overall for the most runs in a Test series, with Don Bradman holding the top spot with 974 runs in the 1930 Ashes. Notably, Gill became the first captain to score four centuries in a single series, with only Bradman (810 runs) having more runs as a captain in a series.

In the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Gill struggled in the final Test at The Oval, scoring just 11 runs in the second innings before being dismissed by Gus Atkinson’s first ball of the second session. In the first innings, he was run out for 21. Meanwhile, Yashasvi Jaiswal shone with a century in the second innings, scoring 118 after resuming the second session at 85. Jaiswal also scored a century earlier in the series. Karun Nair was the other batter dismissed in the session, scoring 17.

At the end of the second session, India’s lead stood at 281 runs, with the team at 304 for 6. Ravindra Jadeja (26 not out) and Dhruv Jurel (25 not out) remained unbeaten. For England to win the Oval Test and claim the series, they must chase a record-breaking target. The highest successful fourth-innings chase at The Oval is 263, achieved by England in 1902 with a one-wicket victory. To repeat such a feat, England will need to make history.
