The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, addressing uncertainties surrounding key players like Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah. Despite doubts, Gill has been named vice-captain, while Bumrah has secured a spot in the team.
The squad announcement, originally scheduled for 1:30 PM on Tuesday (August 19), was delayed by about an hour and a half due to heavy rain in Mumbai, which caused logistical challenges for the selectors. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar and BCCI secretary Debajit Saikia eventually unveiled the team.
The Asia Cup, set to be held in the T20 format, has led to the exclusion of several prominent players. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer have been left out, while Rishabh Pant misses the tournament due to injury. Despite recent good form, Mohammad Siraj has also been omitted due to his inconsistent performances in shorter formats.
The squad features Sanju Samson and Jitesh Sharma as wicketkeepers. The top order includes Abhishek Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Tilak Varma, while the middle order will be anchored by captain Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube.
The Asia Cup will take place in the United Arab Emirates from September 9 to 28. India is placed in Group A alongside arch-rivals Pakistan, Oman, and the UAE.
