Israel Announces Start of Attack on Gaza City

Israel has announced the launch of an attack on Gaza City, the largest city in the besieged Gaza Strip. On Friday, August 29, 2025, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that they have initiated preliminary operations in the city.

The occupying forces have also declared Gaza City a combat zone, stating that no further humanitarian pauses will be observed to allow aid delivery. A month ago, amid widespread criticism, Israel had announced "tactical pauses" from morning to evening to facilitate aid delivery to Gaza’s residents. During these pauses, attacks were halted to ensure humanitarian assistance could reach the population. In a post on X, IDF Arabic spokesperson Avichay Adraee stated, “We are not waiting. We have begun preliminary operations and the initial stages of the attack on Gaza City. We are operating with full force on the outskirts of Gaza City.” Despite the formal announcement today, Israel has been bombing various parts of Gaza City since the beginning of August. Additionally, Israeli tanks have taken positions on the city’s outskirts. Over the past few weeks, the occupying forces have been preparing extensively to take control of Gaza’s largest city, including mobilizing an additional 60,000 reserve soldiers. Due to relentless air and ground bombardments, many residents are fleeing toward eastern Gaza, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
