Israel is recalling most of its diplomatic personnel from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) following an updated travel advisory issued by the country’s National Security Council (NSC). The decision comes in response to heightened security concerns, particularly during Jewish holidays and Shabbat, with fears of potential attacks in the UAE.
Israel’s ambassador to the UAE, Yossi Abraham Sheli, has already been recalled. This follows allegations by the UAE government that Sheli engaged in inappropriate behavior with women at a bar in Abu Dhabi, which was deemed a violation of diplomatic etiquette.
The move is also set against the backdrop of Israel’s recent 12-day military operations in Iran, ongoing operations in Gaza, and increasing international criticism. Several global human rights organizations have expressed concerns over potential genocide in Gaza due to Israel’s actions.
In 2020, the Abraham Accords facilitated the establishment of diplomatic relations between the UAE and Israel, followed by a free trade agreement in 2022, which strengthened ties in business and tourism. However, recent tensions have strained this relationship. The UAE government has lodged diplomatic protests over three controversial incidents involving Sheli, including alleged disrespectful behavior at a bar, heated exchanges with security officials, and violations of protocol, according to Israeli media reports.
The recall of diplomatic personnel signals growing tensions between the two nations.
